Info & Rules

About Traditional-Artists

 We're a group aimed at bringing together traditional artists and artisans on deviantART.  We are not elitist - we welcome artists of all styles, media and levels of ability - if you're traditional, you're in!

How to Join

:bulletred: Q: How do I join the club?
:pointr: A: Just click the "Join Our Group" button on our front page.

In the Note, you are required to include five (5) links to your traditional art pieces suitable for submission to our gallery. Please refer to our submission rules below. This means you must have at least five deviations categorized under Traditional Art or Artisan Crafts in your gallery. If you have no traditional art, or don't currently meet the minimum requirements to join our group, we encourage you to become a watcher until your body of traditional work increases, and then resubmit your request.

We'd be most grateful if you'd display our icon in your journal or our link in your comment signature - it's not a requirement, but it's a great way to spread the word about us! Alternatively, there's a new "Groups" widget that you can add to your front page that will show our icon. :D  Here's how:

:bulletred: Q: How do I add the icon to my journal?
:pointr: A: Just type : icontraditional-artists : (with the colons but without the spaces) into your journal.

:bulletred: Q: How do I add the link to my signature?
:pointr: A: Go to Account Tools :pointr: Edit Settings :pointr: Identity, and type : devtraditional-artists : (with the colons but without the spaces) into the box under "Comment Signature".

:bulletred: Q: How do I use the Groups widget on my front page?
:pointr: A: Go to "Edit Page" on your front page (top right-hand corner) and select the Groups widget from the list.

:note: We reserve the right to decline any membership and rejected applicant will receive a notification.

How to Submit

:bulletred: How do I submit art to the club?
:pointr: Click the "Contribute Art" button on our front page, and select your submission to the current monthly gallery folder.  (Please make sure that you submit to the correct folder.)
:pointr: You can also read the following tutorial for a visual guide on the submission process to a group: How to Submit to a Group

:note: The submissions limit is 2 deviations per month.
:note: Submissions will be open between the 21st and the 30th of every month, except in February will be on the 21st until the 28th.

Submission Rules

:new:
:bulletgreen: Your submission will be approved as long as it meets all of the following requirements:

:megaphone: What is accepted into the Traditional-Artists Gallery?

:bulletorange: Art submitted to our Gallery must be submitted to traditional art categories, e.g. paintings or drawings. We will also accept artisan crafts and mixed media - anything that's handmade.  Important Because of the sheer volume of work submitted to T-A on a weekly basis, the standard of artwork accepted into the gallery is held in a higher scrutiny than most clubs. We shall never, ever discriminate due to the level of skill of the artist - however, we will only take work that is presented only in the best possible way.

:bulletorange: All submissions must be finished pieces. If you consider your art completed ones, NEVER entitle your works Sketches, WIPs, Studies, or the like that implies unfinished/incomplete works.

:bulletorange: Tutorials must be submitted to Group Favorites -> Members' Tutorials. This will not affect your monthly submission slots. :)

:police: Not accepted:

:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Wrongly oriented or improperly cropped image. See below for more details.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Image categorized under Photography, Literature or Digital Art.

:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Un-finished works; WIPs, Doodles, Sketches, Poor linework etc.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Pornographic, Racist, Hate or Fetish work.  See Mature Content below for more details.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Work that has not been created by your own hand or submission from the third party.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Work presented on lined or squared paper when it is not aesthetic to your artwork.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Poorly photographed or scanned work:  tints added by poor camera light; blurred photos; scanner burn; barely visible photos etc.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Cropped, zoomed image without a picture of the whole work displaying as the main part.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Photographs showcasing something that distracts the viewers from the artwork.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: Plain text art.

:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (2) NO images with digitally clear/transparent backgrounds.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (3) You may add a simple digital mat/frame.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (4) You may add a watermark, logo or artwork title.

:bulletorange: Mature content is allowed as long as it is presented in a tasteful manner and has the appropriate mature filter applied if necessary.  The submission administrators will assess on an individual basis.

:bulletorange: Multi-panel artwork:
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (1) Must be a polyptych (diptych, triptych, tetraptych, etc.).
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (2) All images in each piece must follow all group submission rules.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (3) Before-and-after work and step-by-step art will not be accepted.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (4) Digital work to combine artworks must be limited and will be at the discretion of the admins as to whether it is acceptable or not.
:bulletwhite::bulletwhite: (5) Each case will be assessed on an individual basis.

:bulletorange: Art Theft
Anyone found submitting other artists' work as their own will be banned and reported to dA and the original artist will be contacted and informed.

:bulletorange: Fake Art
T-A will not tolerate work submitted that has clearly been manipulated and being passed off as traditional artwork.  If you submit fake art (defined below) we will ban you from the group and report you to dA as well as making all of our affiliates aware of the situation.
:bulletwhite: Photoshopped images being passed off as traditional work
:bulletwhite: Printed images with obvious scribbles on top being passed off as a traditional drawing.
:bulletwhite: Photoshopped drawings – your own or otherwise

:bulletorange: Make it easier for us to get your work in the gallery more quickly, tell us what materials you have used!!

:bulletorange: Admin staff looks closely at each and every deviation submitted before accepting to the gallery. If your submission does not follow all our group rule, it will be rejected from the gallery, and you will be notified about why. Denial by group admins is final. If you have any questions, please feel free to note a Sub Admin!

Please Note...

We realize that with such a large Group, there are going to be bugs that pop-up from time to time, so it is essential that you please use the relevant subjects on notes sent to the group. If you cannot join or submit, or have any questions, affiliate-related or other notes, you need to have appropriate subjects on your notes to get quick responses and avoid them getting mislaid!  ;)

27TH CRITIQUE NIGHT TODAY

Journal Entry: Sat May 5, 2012, 8:33 AM

Critique Night is starting in half an hour! Come join us!
Attention please! Because of a big backlog the Critique Wanted folder is closed for the time being. It is starting to look better, but we still have way too many works in it to be able to allow new ones in, sorry. :(

If you want to receive an additional reminder that there will be a CN the day before it takes place, comment on this journal!

27TH CRITIQUE NIGHT APPROACHING

May's Critique Night is this week, see if you can make it!

:pointr: Date:Saturday, May 5th
:pointr: Time:4pm GMT
Use this Time Zone Converter to work out what time that is for you.
:pointr: Location: T-A Chatroom
:pointr: Anything else? As usual, how long it takes depends on how many people are there; ask any questions you have in the comments or note the group or me, ~Elveanna; and remember that you can't submit anything this time!

See you there!

I will post the pieces from last time together with those that are going to get feedback now.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR NEW CRITIC CONTRIBUTORS

If you like to give people feedback on their work, you know a bit about art and would like to take on some responsibility, apply as Critic Contributor!

Here you can read how you can apply.

WHAT IS A CRITIQUE NIGHT?

People who want feedback on a piece of art submit it as explained below.
In the actual Critique Night the work that is currently given feedback will be displayed as a thumbnail at the top of the chat window. Everyone present is given some time to think about it. If one wants to say something, they raise their hand by posting ^ and wait until the moderator calls on them. Then they post their feedback, preferably typed while waiting.
The feedback should be helpful and constructive and cover the good aspects as well as those the artist can improve on.
The moderator will call on people to give their feedback in the order they ^ed. If they're done, they type "finished", so people know they can move on.

Example (from 1st CN):
<Elveanna> [Moderator in this case] for everyone: piece xy is next
<Donguri7> ^
<BJ92-ESQUE> ^
<Elveanna> okay, Donguri7
<Donguri7> I love this one, the handling of the charcoal is amazing, especially in the rendering of the eyes - so subtle. I would say that the nose is too light, drawing too much attention away from the gentler parts of the work.
<Donguri7> Really the cheekbone closest to us should have a stronger higlight, and the nose less
<LeahJay> ^
<Donguri7> But I love the way you've treated the other lights, like on the collar
<Elveanna> ^
<WhisperingWolf> ^
<Donguri7> And how you've contrasted a light background to the dark side of the face, and vice versa
<Donguri7> *finished
<Elveanna> allright, BJ92-ESQUE's turn  (...)

Usually a piece gets feedback from about four people. In order to be fair we try to have about 20-30 minutes of time for every piece. If more people want to give feedback, they will be asked to do so directly at the work, if there are very few it might be put back to the Critique Wanted folder to get some more.

And some helpful chat basics:
:bulletred: If you enter a chatroom and see nothing - don't think it's empty and leave immediately. Your browser just won't know what as been chatted already, so it will seem blank, even if there are people present :)
:bulletred: To see who is online, look to the right. The grey colummn there (the frame of the overall chat window) lists all the people present - if there is only your name, then you are alone.
:bulletred: Please give people some time to respond - logging on and off in split seconds makes it hard to greet you. Especially when people are typing feedback it might look very quiet and empty, but a friendly "hello" is almost always answered within one or two minutes.
:bulletred: If you want to talk someone explicitly, you can "tab" them: type the first letters of the user's name, (e.g. El for Elveanna), then press tab - and the browser will complete the name. If you then post what you said, it will be highlighted in the recipient's window. Very helpful if there are many people talking simultaneously :)

But really, the best way to find out how a CN works and what it is like is to participate! Just pop in and take a look, we're all really friendly! :glomp:

HOW TO SUBMIT WORKS FOR CRITIQUE NIGHTS -

:new: Attention! The Critique Wanted folder is currently closed.

:pointr: A folder has been opened in favorites: "Critique Wanted" - to which anyone at any time is able to submit. You can submit as many pieces as you like, but in a Critique Night only one will get feedback!
Please note: We only accept traditional work!
:pointr: Works from said folder will be selected in the order they were submitted to get feedback during Critique Nights;
:pointr: Works that received critique from TA will be moved to the favorites folder "Critiqued by TA".

:bulletyellow: There will be about 10 Critique Night slots. In order to have one of these secure please not only submit your work to the folder, but also write the group a Note with the title "Critique Wanted" or something similar and a link to your work. Slots will be filled by notes first, then the rest will be selected from the folder.

:bulletyellow: Until now pieces directly submitted at the Critiqe Night usually recieved feedback as well. Be aware that with the opening of the "Critique Wanted" folder we will probably have enough pieces for a whole CN - so if you just submit at the Critique Night, you might have to wait till the next one!
If you want to be sure to get feedback, submit your work officially to the folder.

:megaphone: Please note:
The folder is open to all members. If you have some time and feel like it - go and give some feedback, it's rewarding for both sides!
